Chicago Cubs: Be Alert for Foul Balls!

See this sign, it's been hanging at Wrigley Field since I was 2 years old and I can assure you alot of years have gone by since I first saw this sign. If you've ever been to the Friendly Confines, and you sit in the lower seats (aka The Box Seats) you come across this little friendly warning on the way to your seats. It is part of Wrigley tradition like the Scoreboard, the blue and white home team pinstripes, the ivy on the outfield, the heartbreak.  Apparently two "Lifelong" Cub fans didn't see the sign or heed the warning, and went to the local daily paper in town with the sad story of the husband not paying attention to the game, who got beaned in the face with a foul ball demanding the Chicago Cubs extend a net around the infield past each dugout in order that no one "dies".  I really can't believe this guy  doesn't have the balls to take responsibility for  not paying attention to the game.  Here's how you can be safe at the ball park  1) pay attention  2)  stay home and watch it on it tv. This couple obviously never heard the Tom Hanks quote

Johnny Frigo: Right at Home..

I sort of hate myself for missing this over the 4th of July, but if you're a baseball fan and especially if you are a Chicago Cub fan. You know Johnny Frigo, more than you think. He was a bass player and a violinist who played with Jimmy and Tommy  Dorsey and even played in a band with Chico Marx. I met him once when he stopped by work for an interview, nice man. Cub fans know him as the man who in 1969, probably wrote one of the most beloved Cub fight songs ever. "Hey Hey Holy Mackeral"  If you're a fan of 80's Hair Metal, you might remember his son, Derek who died in 2004.
I don't have any of his jazz records, I basically loved him for Hey Hey Holy Mackeral. His website has samples of his work, perhaps I can search out some of his music and present it to you all at a later day. Let's hope Johnny gets a meeting with the big man upstairs and puts a whisper in his ear about the 2007 Cubs.

See You Around, Mr Butch. Take Care of Yourself, OK.

If you ever went to college in Boston in the past 30 years or so or were in a band that made it's way thru Boston, you would of run into Butch, Mr. Butch. He might be with his guitar laying down Hendrix riffs, he might of been a bit buzzed back in the day, or he might of just been hanging out on a stoop in Kenmore. But if there was ever a man or human, who defined kindness and pureness of soul it was Mr. Butch. Earlier tonight, a friend sent me a link, informing me Mr. Butch passed away from injuries suffered in an scooter accident. I'm a bit crushed. When I was a young college student in the mid 80's in Boston, living just a few blocks from Kenmore Sq and The Rat, Butch was always there, giving you advice or introducing you to other people you might connect with musically, politically or just socially, Mr Butch knew us all and you knew Mr. Butch. Kenmore Square had changed alot since I left Boston, places were torn down, renovated into luxury condos etc, but I would always run into Mr. Butch or I should say, I seeked him out occasionally for a chat when I returned to Boston for business. He would fill me in on what had changed but you knew nothing had, just the building the facades. He knew all college students, punks and musicians are the same but so inherently different. He knew all our strengths and what we would become. Mr Butch  wasn't the Mayor of Boston,  or the King of Kenmore. He was just Mr. Butch. Bless you, Butch. Bless you.

Neifi Perez: Hopped up on Goofballs

Or this could be titled: BUNT NEIFI BUNT!!!

Former Cub, Neifi Perez (now Detroit Tiger) was suspended for 25 games over the weekend for testing positive for amphetamines. If you read this story, from The Detroit Free Press, you learn the first time MLB doesn't do anything but the 2nd time you get suspended. He got a slap on the hand and went back for more. The funny thing is The Tigers, seem so blase about the suspension. The guy had a .173 Batting Avg in like 64 at bats. Defensively he was a good utility man , any position any time until the starter got better etc. But at the bat, OH MAN!!! Which is where the secondary title Bunt! Neifi! Bunt comes from. (refers to him bunting Cubs down 1, man on third bottom of the 9th, 2 outs. And yes he Bunted)

Last season I used to joke when ESPN was doing that big breaking news story about Barry Bonds called "Chasing Ruth" and now "Chasing Aaron" I wanted to start a blog called "Chasing Neifi" *putting stats of Little Leaguers up with better  Batting Averages than Neifi Perez.

Good riddance Neifi, I'm sure we will see a report on you about being arrested for something in the Dominican Republic.
